# Stonewall Jackson’s Christian Witness to Slaves

“Before the war began in 1861, Jackson began a Christian witness for black slaves in Lexington \[Virginia\]. To do so, even to think of doing so, was in essence to break the laws on the books in the South. But as Jackson’s wife said, ‘His interest in that race was simply because they had souls to save.’ (p. 77, 78) So in the autumn of 1855, he organized his Sabbath school for the instruction of the black people of his city.” — David T. Myers, [***Stonewall Jackson***](/authors/thomas-jonathan-stonewall-jackson)*: The Spiritual Side* (2000), p. 12
