About Confessional Presbyterian
Discover the voices that shaped American Presbyterianism. Confessional Presbyterian curates and reprints the historic sermons, essays, and writings of past Presbyterians to enliven the church today.
The past isn’t dead. Primary sources aren’t inaccessible. And the voices of 18th- and 19th-century American Presbyterians remain relevant.
Confessional Presbyterian wants you to read dead Presbyterians for life. We gather, preserve, and reprint the writings of and about American Presbyterians. We are motivated by the conviction that rooting ourselves in the past strengthens Christ’s church for the future.
Our Historical Foundation #
Our work stands in the shadow of the Log College, the first American Presbyterian “seminary,” founded around 1726 by William Tennent in Pennsylvania. Though it began humbly, the Log College helped give birth to Princeton Seminary and influenced numerous institutions committed to an educated, faithful ministry.
Early Presbyterian pastors and teachers preached, taught, and wrote prolifically—books, pamphlets, periodicals, and letters. Some have been reprinted in recent decades; many more remain obscure, scattered, or forgotten. Today, digital archives make it possible to gather this material in one accessible place. Confessional Presbyterian seeks to do exactly that: to curate as much surviving 18th–19th-century American Presbyterian literature as possible for the benefit of the church.
Why We Publish What We Publish #
Because our site is an historical archive and scholarly resource, we do not endorse every argument or theological position represented here. Our authors often disagreed sharply with one another—and at times with us. Even the Log College itself faced criticism in its own day.
Yet we trust readers, with discernment given by the Holy Spirit, to glean what is true and helpful and to recognize what is not. We publish and reprint these works in the hope that they will serve the 21st-century church—sometimes as models to follow, and sometimes as warnings to heed.
A Ministry of Greenville Seminary #
Confessional Presbyterian is a ministry of Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary (GPTS), an institution devoted to confessional standards and the training of pastors. GPTS enables and supports this work, and many of the resources on this site draw on the teaching and scholarship of its faculty.
