John Brevard Alexander, Sr.

1834–1911

John Brevard Alexander (May 27, 1834 – June 24, 1911) was a distinguished physician, historian, and Presbyterian churchman born in Lemley’s Township, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, of Scots-Irish descent. After graduating with high honors from Davidson College and the Medical College of South Carolina, he served as a surgeon in the Civil War and then practiced medicine in his home county, where he also wrote important local histories including The History of Mecklenburg County from 1740 to 1900. He was a long-time elder of Bethel Presbyterian Church, an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte later in life, and authored several works on early settlers and church history before his death and burial in Elmwood Cemetery.
