John Edmiston Alexander

1815–1902

John Edmiston Alexander (1815–1902) was a nineteenth-century American Presbyterian minister, educator, and church historian educated at Jefferson College and Princeton Theological Seminary and licensed to preach in 1842. He served pastorates in Pennsylvania, Ohio (including Old Washington Presbyterian Church), and Tennessee, and was also involved in classical education as a school principal and founder of academies. Alexander authored historical works on Presbyterianism, most notably A Brief History of the Synod of Tennessee, from 1817 to 1887, preserving important records of Southern Presbyterian church life.
