William Mayo Atkinson
William Mayo Atkinson (April 22, 1796 – February 24, 1849) was a Virginia-born Presbyterian minister who graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) in 1814, initially practiced law, and later devoted his life to church work and religious education in Virginia. After serving as general agent of the Virginia Bible Society and organizing Presbyterian activities across the region, he became pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Winchester in 1838 and subsequently worked as a traveling agent for the Presbyterian Board of Education. Atkinson was known for his leadership within the church during a period of theological and social tensions in antebellum Virginia and remained active in ministry until his death, being buried in Winchester’s Mount Hebron Cemetery.
