Archibald Alexander on the Hallmark of a Living Faith

R. Andrew Myers

“A living faith is always accompanied by love, so the Apostle says ‘faith works by love and purifies the heart.’ This is and will forever be an important distinction between a living and a dead faith. The man who sincerely believes in the Lord Jesus Christ, will always be possessed of love in proportion to his faith. This is the very essence of religion, and without which the Apostle says, the exercise of all gifts, and the performance of all duties would profit nothing. This is the grace which shall never fail. But whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge it shall vanish away. But love endureth forever and is greater therefore than either faith or hope.” — Archibald Alexander, A Treatise in Which the Difference Between a Living and a Dead Faith is Explained (1791)
