A Narrative of the Imprisonment of Two Non-Conformist Ministers

Record of the 1704 arrest and trial of Presbyterian ministers Francis Makemie and John Hampton in New York for preaching without Lord Cornbury’s license. Details the legal dispute over the Act of Toleration.

Although Makemie was not the first Presbyterian minister to serve in the American colonies, because of his pioneering labors along the Eastern Seaboard, particularly in the establishment of the first Presbytery in America, he is often credited as “the Father of American Presbyterianism.”
