Rev. Timothy Alden Jr. (1771 – 1839) was born on August 28, 1771 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard College in 1794, and after theological study was ordained as a Congregational and Presbyterian minister in 1799. He served as co-pastor in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, taught and led schools in Boston, Newark, and New York, and in 1817 became the first president of Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, where he significantly promoted education and missionary work among Native American communities. Alden was also a prolific author, publishing works such as A Collection of American Epitaphs and Inscriptions (1814) and An Account of Sundry Missions, before his death on July 5, 1839.
