Horace Newton Allen (April 23, 1858 – December 11, 1932) was an American physician, Presbyterian missionary, and diplomat who was among the first Western Protestant missionaries in Korea, arriving there in 1884 and helping establish the first Western medical institution, Chejungwon (now Severance Hospital), and its medical school. He leveraged his medical service to gain the trust of King Gojong, which led to his appointment to the United States Legation in Korea and later service as U.S. Minister and Consul General to Korea from 1897 to 1905. After being recalled amid diplomatic disagreements, he returned to the United States, practiced medicine, and left a legacy in Korea as a pioneer of Western medicine and Christian missionary work.
