Intemperance, a Just Cause For Alarm and Exertion: A Sermon, Preached at West Springfield, April 5th, 1827, the Day of the Annual Fast

W.B. Sprague’s 1827 sermon denounces intemperance as a social and spiritual scourge, urging personal abstinence and public reform, including removing intoxicating liquors from entertainments.

A prolific preacher and author, Sprague is also known as the “Patriarch of American Collectors,” for his collection of autographs, including those of every signer of the Declaration of Independence, pamphlets and other materials. He authored the Annals of the American Pulpit, an important collection of biographical sketches.
