Sprague exhorts ministers to grasp the immortality and eternal destiny of souls, making soul-care and revival the driving purpose of ministry. He warns against worldly distractions that dull zeal.

A prolific preacher and author, Sprague is also known as the “Patriarch of American Collectors,” for his collection of autographs, including those of every signer of the Declaration of Independence, pamphlets and other materials. He authored the Annals of the American Pulpit, an important collection of biographical sketches.
