An 1850 Andover Seminary discourse surveying models of pulpit eloquence, tracing notable English and Scottish preachers and urging students to cultivate both composition and delivery.

A prolific preacher and author, Sprague is also known as the “Patriarch of American Collectors,” for his collection of autographs, including those of every signer of the Declaration of Independence, pamphlets and other materials. He authored the Annals of the American Pulpit, an important collection of biographical sketches.
