Hezekiah James Balch was an American Presbyterian minister and educator who played a leading role in founding and teaching at Greeneville College (later part of Tusculum University) in Tennessee, and actively shaped early Presbyterianism on the American frontier. He was known for his powerful preaching, commitment to classical and religious education, and efforts to defend and propagate evangelical doctrine in the rapidly developing western territories.
