Archibald Stobo, of Carolina — Presbyterianism’s Stormy-Petrel

Sketch of Rev. Archibald Stobo, a stern Scottish Presbyterian who, after surviving the failed 1699 Darien expedition, settled in Charles Town and preached rigid predestinarianism that strained colonial life.

Stobo helped to found the first Presbytery in the New World (Panama) and the first Presbytery in the Southern United States (South Carolina).
