The Columbia Tradition

Writing during Columbia Seminary’s move to Atlanta, William Childs Robinson argues that the true “Columbia tradition” is not tied to buildings or location but to unwavering commitment to Christ and his Word. Robinson urges Columbia Seminary to remain firmly committed to historic Presbyterian orthodoxy: rooted in Scripture, Calvinism, and loyalty to Christ.

William Childs Robinson (1897–1982) was a highly influential 20th-century American theologian, author, and Professor of Ecclesiastical History and Church Policy. Serving at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, from 1926 to 1967, he opposed the progressive drift of the church by defending historic Calvinism and Reformation doctrines, including justification by faith and the sovereignty of God.
